The moment when a lighting system breaks isn’t usually what inspires the creation of a new one. But research-driven design studio Formafantasma’s new modular LED lighting system for Flos, SuperWire, takes the prospect of restoration and repair as its creative foundation. The elegant floor lamp (pictured), table lamp, and various suspension configurations of the SuperWire collection do not hide the means of their construction. Rather, they invite you to see how they come apart. It’s not the first time Flos and Formafantasma have collaborated — Flos was the first major design company to partner with the duo in 2018 — but this new lighting system marks a particularly innovative moment in their partnership. SuperWire, which débuted as a prototype at Milan Design Week in 2024 and is now launching worldwide, is designed for sustainability and ease of ownership. Inside each lamp, twelve slender LED strips are cocooned by borosilicate tubes as fine as spaghetti, a reengineering of the standard LED filament that creates a warmer glow in an atypical length. As Simone Farresin, one half of Formafantasma alongside Andrea Trimarchi, once admitted, “LED waste is horrible.” It’s why each lamp component can be swapped out with ease, allowing for repairs without returning the entire system to the manufacturer. Trimarchi and Farresin chose SuperWire’s materials — the hexagonal aluminum framework and embedded clear glass — for their recyclability. Even the screws that jut out of the designs are part of their sustainable concept, visual cues that you can easily unscrew the whole thing. “For us, there is a pleasure in understanding the construction of something,” they say. “It’s a certain type of clarity — a philosophical transparency — that comes when the object in front of you is explaining how it is made in an intuitive way,” Farresin adds. Superwire is a lamp that does not conceal its screws. A lamp that, in breaking, reminds you it was always meant to be put back together.
