TUFTY-TIME SOFA SERIES
By Patricia Urquiola, 2025
When Spanish-born star designer and undisputed queen of Milan Patricia Urquiola débuted her Tufty-Time collection for B&B Italia in 2005, she had a clear mission: to liberate the chesterfield and capitonné from their staid, dusty past. Urquiola spits out modern design classics almost as fast as she speaks — which, trust us, is fast — and Tufty-Time was no different. She reimagined these classic forms with an inviting contemporary sensibility, drawing from the organic lines of 1960s and 70s furniture. The result wasn’t just a collection — it was a veritable moment in design history, a sleek Y2K take on comfort packaged in a silhouette with a tantalizing resemblance to a chocolate bar. There have been multiple iterations of Tufty-Time: in 2006, Tufty-Time appeared in leather, in 2011, Tufty-Too was introduced, and in 2015, Tufty-Time 15 came with a new textile cover, split into large squares.

Now, as B&B Italia celebrates 20 years of its tufted icon, Tufty-Time 20 emerges — breathing new life into the modular system while doubling down on comfort and sustainability, offering thicker padding and slightly higher seats. “I think sustainability cannot be limited to the use of recycled materials,” Urquiola once said. “A good design project takes into account durability, which not only refers to the longevity of materials, but also to the concepts and ideas behind a project that endure over time.” A new curved module allows for more fluid configurations, and possibly more convivial inter-actions — all 14 of the system’s modules can easily evolve with and adapt to their surroundings. With circularity in mind, Tufty-Time 20 has been designed for complete disassembly. And with a new bouclé-effect chenille and oak coffee tables joining the lineup, Tufty-Time 20 is proof that even when you get it right the first time, there are always new ways to define modern luxury.
